Manners & Tips

🙇 General

No tipping anywhere. Bow slightly when greeting. Speak quietly on trains. Remove shoes when entering homes/some restaurants (look for shoe shelf at entrance).

🍽 Eating

Say "itadakimasu" before eating. Don't stick chopsticks upright in rice. Slurping noodles is OK and even polite! Don't pass food chopstick-to-chopstick.

🚆 Trains

No phone calls. Priority seats for elderly/pregnant/disabled. Line up on platform markings. Left side of escalator in Tokyo, right in Osaka.

🗑 Trash

Japan has very few public trash cans. Carry your trash with you. At convenience stores, use the bins provided. Separate into: burnable (燃えるゴミ), plastic (プラスチック), cans/bottles (缶・びん).

♨️ Onsen / Bath

See the Onsen panel for detailed bathing rules and etiquette.
